Alternative/Renewable Energy

How Does this Technology Work?

Picture
The water flows through a pipe or penstock then pushes against and turns blades in a turbine to spin a generator to produce electricity.  In a run-of-river system, the force of the current applies the needed pressure while in a storage system, water is accumulated in reservoirs created by dams, then released as needed to generate electricity.

What can this Type of Energy be Used For?

Picture
Can generate electricity.

What are the Positive Aspects?

Picture
1- once a dam is built, the energy is virtually free.
2- no waste or pollution produced.
3- much more reliable than wind, solar, or wave power.
4- Hydro-electric power stations can increase to full power very quickly, unlike other power stations.
5- electricity can be generated constantly.

What are the Negative Aspects?

Picture
1- The dams are very expensive to build, However, many dams are also used for flood control or irrigation, so building costs can be shared.
2- Building a large dam will flood a very large area upstream, causing problems for animals that used to live there.
3-Water quality and quantity downstream can be affected, which can have an impact on plant life.

What Percentage of US Energy Comes from this Technology?

3% of electricity
